Combining Building & PC Access: HID on the Desktop

hid-on-the-desktopHID Global, manufacturer of access cards, Fargo card printers, and Asure ID card creation software, has launched HID on the Desktop. HID on the Desktop is a new security access solution that allows companies to enhance the security of their computers and networks by requiring employees to scan their ID cards to gain access to the company’s Windows equipped computers.

The new access control solution from HID includes the brand’s naviGO software, which improves upon existing Windows security access protocols. HID’s naviGO software prompts employees to wave their HID Prox or i-Class contactless cards over the OMNIKEY readers connected to the computer to verify that the card holder has permission to use the computer. Once the employee ID card has been authenticated, the naviGO software also provides a second layer of security by forcing employees to enter a password or a PIN in order to use the computer and gain access to intellectual property.

The most convenient aspect of HID on the Desktop for companies that already use HID cards for physical access control is that they can use the existing employee ID cards to support this new security access solution. Redeploying employee ID badges to support HID on the Desktop is not necessary since the solution relies on the existing access information already stored on the ID card.
