Tips for Printing on Pre-Printed ID Cards
If you are going to print on pre-printed ID cards there are a few things to consider before purchasing an ID card printer.
Examine the Card
Is the pre-printed card a standard PVC card or is there a coating of some sort on the card? If the card is a standard PVC you should have no issues. In the rare instance that there is a coating on the ID card, we suggest you send a sample card for testing. When in doubt, send in a sample. At ID Wholesaler, we’re happy to test for you at no charge. We have found that some ribbons are unable to adhere to coatings on cards. Testing will determine which printer and ribbon is the best fit.
Talk to an ID Expert
It is recommended that you communicate your personalization intentions when ordering your pre-printed cards and the ID card printer to ensure a successful program. Not all ID card printers offer a monochrome ribbon that will adhere to hard-to-print surfaces, such as the glossy finish applied to many pre-printed cards. Evolis offers a black wax ribbon, but there are also several premium black ribbons available from Fargo that have proven to be successful.
Contact ID Wholesaler’s team of ID specialists at 800-321-4405 to help you choose the right printer for printing on pre-printed cards. Please give as much information as possible about the cards.
