Many organizations choose to augment their ID card program by implementing holograms. Their reasoning can range from wanting to prevent cards from being duplicated or counterfeited. They may also want to incorporate an additional layer of security and authenticity. There are three primary options to accomplish this:

1. Adding holograms manually by hand This is both an inexpensive and durable solution. The self-adhesive laminate film is applied by hand to the card and instantly increases its level of security. It's made of a pressure-sensitive polyester film for long-lasting use, and it includes an embedded holographic image in your choice of four designs and two different thicknesses. Although it doesn't require a special laminating or retransfer printer, the main drawback – especially if you have hundreds of cards or more to apply the laminate to – is that it can be quite time-consuming.
2. Adding holograms with your ID card printer The first requirement is that you must have either a laminating or retransfer card printer in order to add holographic film to ID cards.A laminate (also referred to as "overlaminate") film with embedded holographic designs and adhered to the surface of cards during the printing process. This type of application is available in standard and custom designs (the latter of which is more expensive).
3. Using cards made with embedded holograms These unique cards provide a fast and simple method for creating a custom ID card while preventing exact duplication of cards. In addition, they increase the security of cards without the cost of holographic laminate film. They are nearly impossible to duplicate and provide superior graphic quality. Fargo and Zebra offer these types of cards, and they can be used in any ID card printer. They are available in standard and custom designs.
