Important Tips for Designing Your ID Cards

Custom ID card design is important for two reasons:Important ID Card Design Tips (1).  It is a direct reflection of your company. A professional-looking design speaks well to your company's brand and image. (2). Most importantly, a unique card design that isn't easily duplicated is a key security feature. Whether you’re doing it yourself or working with a graphic designer, here are five things to keep in mind when designing your organization’s ID badges.

#1 – What information will go on the cards?

Make a list of the data specifications your cards will need so you’re sure to include all necessary elements in your design. The design will revolve around this list - content is king!

#2 – What will the photo look like?

Larger photos typically print in higher quality and are more visible and easier to verify.

#3 – What orientation will work best?

Your logo, employee photos, barcode, and other card contents may fit better in a horizontal or vertical format.

#4 – How will the cards be worn after printed?

If you won’t be using badge holders, you’ll need to consider the location, shape, and size of the card slot for lanyards, badge reels, and clips since the slot punch will interrupt the design layout.

#5 – How secure will your cards be?

If you’ll be using cards with embedded visual card security features, such as HoloMark or Verimark, know where the features will be located on the card so the ID card design can accommodate it. While designing the card, you will need to balance the need for a unique design with the ability to easily read the information on the badge. If you use a font that is not legible or print on a background that is too busy, the information on the ID badge will be difficult to authenticate. You may consider working with a graphic designer or your marketing department to create an ID badge that is both difficult to replicate and representative of your brand or organization.
