What are Proximity Cards Used For?

A proximity card – or "prox card" – is a low-frequency, 125kHz credential with an embedded metallic antenna coil to store cardholder data. These contactless smart cards can be read without What are proximity cards used fior?having to actually insert it into a prox card reader. Prox cards are held or swiped at a card reader to gain access into a building or within certain designated areas of a building. Proximity cards or access badges are plastic PVC cards that allow a cardholder to gain entry into a building or a specific area within the confines of a building. Prox cards provide access to enter certain points such as doors, parking gates, or other areas monitored by the card which underscores the true value of their security. The manner in which proximity cards work is this:  access cards contain a pre-defined number that is read by a proximity card reader programmed to "read" these numbers.  The card's number is transmitted to a computer system that makes the decision whether or not to grant access to the building or not, depending on their defined security or access level. If the card information is programmed into the access control list within the computer, it allows the system to unlock the access point so that the person may enter.  The information is kept in the system so that if the company wants to create reports or audits, they can easily perform this in an automated fashion. Such reports also allow purview for who entered the access point and what time specifically they did so. Proximity cards are a cost-effective way to control who has access to your building. While locks and keys also allow you to secure your building, the inconvenience and expense of changing locks and re-issuing keys in the event that they are misplaced, forgotten, or lost not only becomes expensive but also time-consuming. In addition, standard keys can easily be copied or duplicated which creates an even greater security risk to the facility and to the employees within it.What are Proximity Cards Used For?
