3 Common Questions About Dual-Sided ID Card Printers

As you begin shopping for an ID card printer, you'll notice that you will need to choose between a single- or a dual-sided ID card printer. Not all printers can print on both sides of the card in one pass - only printers that specify dual-sided printing can. Read the answers to three of the most common questions about dual-sided ID card printers to learn which is best for you!

What is the difference between a single- and a dual-sided ID card printer?

Simply put, a single-sided printer prints on one side of your cards and a dual-sided printer prints on both sides of your cards in one process.

Can I print on both sides of a card with a single-sided card printer?

Technically you can print one side of your cards with a single-sided ID card printer, load them back into your card hopper and send them through your printer again to print the other side. However, this is not only time consuming, it's also not recommended by any of the card printer manufacturers as this practice tends to damage the sensitive printheads in card printers. In fact, damage to a printhead from this type of non-standard use may even void printer warranty coverage.

Do I need to decide single or dual before I buy my printer?

Some single-sided printers can be upgraded anytime to two-sided printing. If you are unsure whether your needs may change in the future, or perhaps you may be planning to expand how your cards will be used, we recommend shopping for a printer that offers upgrade options when you'll need them. In short, when deciding between the two, choose a single-sided card printer if you will be creating ID cards with limited cardholder information and a dual-sided card printer if you want the front of your cards to remain clean and uncluttered. Printing some of your card-holder info on the back of your cards will keep the front of your cards looking their best!
