What is FIPS 201?

The Federal Information Processing Standards Publication 201 (also referred to as "FIPS 201") is a requirement for acceptance and use by Federal departments and agencies, developed by the United States Department of Commerce. In order to be compliant with FIPS 201, government agencies are required to take precautions and abide by the security requirements established by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD 12) for secure photo ID credentials issuance. FIPS focuses on topics within the information technology industry to meet and maintain a common level of quality or standard of interoperability, allowing any government facility or information system to verify a cardholder’s identity using the credentials on a Personal Identity Verification (or PIV) card. We carry a variety ID card printers that have been approved for meeting FIPS 201 compliance. Because each is government accredited, these printers are an optimal solution for government and military cards, driver's licenses, or applications where long-lasting and reliable access control is a requirement.
