Proximity Cards vs. Metal Keys
We've been using metal door keys on our business doors for decades. Why should we switch?
Good question. Seems pretty straight forward, right? Metal door keys have been the norm since locks have been around, but with great advancement in security and monitoring there are many reasons to upgrade to proximity cards.
For example, let's say you have a warehouse at your business that 20 people hold a key to. Monday morning you notice $5,000 in equipment missing from the warehouse. Who do you question? All 20 people? Do you accuse and threaten the return of your property? The answer is unclear since you can’t be sure which of the 20 people came into the building over the weekend.
This is where proximity cards come into play. A "prox" card looks like a typical blank credit card, but it has technology, normally RFID, inside the card. To access a building or room, a prox card is simply waived in front of a small wall-mounted reader outside the locked door. The card gives off a frequency and the reader wired to your main access control system grants or denies access to the cardholder based on your predefined card rights. The main access control system in your company’s computer will tell you who has access to what door/s, at what time, on what days, etc. Each cardholder has a different numbered card.
So back to the missing equipment example. To find the guilty party, you simply check your access control system to see who accessed the warehouse over the weekend. With a metal key, you would never have known this information. Plus you would potentially need to change the locks and replace all 20 keys.
