What Makes a Printer Portable?

New technology coupled with lighter housing and internal parts for photo ID printers is making it easier than ever to print ID cards almost anywhere that you have access to a computer. Printer portability allows you to be more mobile and efficient when your badge printing is located at multiple offices or additional venues, such as:
  • Schools that have multiple campuses
  • Offices that have more than one location
  • Sporting events
  • Demonstrations or training sessions
  • Trade shows or conferences
In order to make your printer more portable, the first thing you'll need is a printer that is Ethernet capable which will allow more than one user to connect and send print jobs to your ID card printer. A traveling case to keep your printer safe from damage while transporting to and from locations is a smart and affordable investment. All of our transport cases meet UPS shipping requirements and are watertight, airtight, dust and corrosion-proof, and padlock ready. It's also a good idea to purchase software that is portable or capable of being networked.  (e.g., Card Exchange lets you bring your software with you via a dongle). There are also networked versions such as Card Exchange Small Business Server if you need to share database information from another computer. The following ID card printers offer a convenient compact design with standard built-in USB and Ethernet for reliable portability:
  • Magicard Rio Pro Printer
  • Fargo DTC4250e Printer
  • Evolis Primacy ID Card Printer
  • Magicard Enduro 3E Uno Printer
  • Datacard SD260 Printer
Quick Tip If you do a lot of off-site printing of badges, I would recommend having a second printer in place as a back-up so you don’t get caught without a printer in-house. You might also want to consider purchasing loaner coverage on your printer so if you happen to have to send it in for a repair we can ship another printer out to you.
