Retransfer printing (also known as "reverse transfer printing") is the latest technology in plastic card printing and is able to

produce true full bleed images in high-quality color. Traditional "dye sublimation" card printing (also referred to as "direct-to-card printing") requires that the printhead of the card printer print directly onto the card material through the printer ribbon.
A
retransfer printer transfers the image to the retransfer film where it is able to accurately reproduce color. It prints an image that has an "over the edge" bleed to ensure 100% card coverage. This process that also ensures that the printhead does not come in contact with the card, extending the life of the printhead.
Some advantages of retransfer printers are:
- Reduced cost of ownership
Due to the superior print process of retransfer printers, there is a very low waste factor in this type of card production. It's particularly important when printing onto expensive smart cards that often are imperfect which will cause problems in traditional direct-to-card printing.
- No printhead replacement costs
There is no need to factor in the cost of a replacement printhead due to the unique printing process of retransfer printing. Because of this, most reverse transfer printers come with a lifetime printhead warranty.
- Durability
Retransfer film makes the card printing more durable than traditional dye sublimation printing methods. Not only will your cards look far superior, but they will last longer too.
