Two Types of Black Monochrome Ribbons
Many printer manufacturers offer two types of black monochrome ink ribbons: black dye sublimation and black resin ribbons.
Black Dye Sublimation Ribbons
Black dye sublimation ribbons are used when printing photos or when more than one shade of gray is needed on your card. This type of ribbon can produce many shades of gray instead of just one shade of black.
A black dye sublimation ribbon will print a photo, but it will have a coarse, grainy look to the image. Uses would include an event card or a membership card to a warehouse club. You wouldn't want to use a black dye sublimation ribbon for a company photo ID card.
Black Resin Ribbons
Black resin ribbons are used to print text, barcodes or simple images such as a black, one-color logo. When printing barcodes, we recommend using a premium black resin ribbon to ensure that it can be read by a barcode reader.
For a professional-looking photo ID card without a coarse, grainy look to the image, you will need to use a full-color ribbon.
