How are Rewritable ID Cards Used?

Example of a Rewritable ID Card

A common question I often hear from our customers is: “How are rewritable ID cards used?”

Some manufacturers like Magicard, Evolis, and Fargo have printers that feature rewrite technology and offer rewritable cards for use with their rewritable printers. Once the rewrite feature in the driver is enabled, it can be used with your ID card software to create professional-looking rewritable ID cards.

Rewritable ID cards have one glossy side in PVC for color or monochrome dye sublimation printing and a matte finish side with a blue or black thermo-sensitive material that can be erased and reprinted up to 500 times.

The ink is in the rewritable card, and since you're using the heat of the printhead to pull the ink to the surface of the card, you're eliminating the need for a ribbon to print on the back of the card. This means that you can have a photo ID in full color on the front of the card while having black or blue ink on the back side that can easily be erased, rewritten, and reused.

The data on the back can be erased and changed whenever you need to update the card. Some uses for these cards include:

  • Visitor details on an temporary badge
  • Bus passes
  • Ski resort passes
  • Student IDs
  • Membership cards with subscription details
  • Loyalty cards with the updated number of points
