How to Make Your ID Cards More Secure

As Account Managers here at ID Wholesaler, we’ve been asked countless times how to make ID cards more secureHow to Increase ID Card Securitymore. The problem many customers run into is that their ID card printer doesn’t have lamination. Coupled with this dilemma, they’ve realized that hand-applied laminate can be too time-consuming, particularly when they have a lot of cards to print. Short of adding a lamination module to your printer (not all ID card printers allow for this) or purchasing a new printer altogether, there aren’t many additional options. However, there are the hand-applied laminates mentioned earlier. There are also cards that come with the security features already built into the framework of the card. Here are a number of popular Visual Security Elements (VSEs) that can be added to your cards to enhance the level security. Translucent Holographic Foil This type of foil features a translucent hologram that is embedded directly in the card, providing maximum durability for the hologram, as well as making it virtually impossible for counterfeiters to tamper with or alter the security features. Since this specialized foil is translucent, the watermark or holograph can be seen with multiple diffractive angles. Translucent holographic foil cards can also be customized by adding your organization’s logo or any additional text you would like. Not only will this augment the level of your card’s security; it complements your company’s branding efforts as well. Metalized Holographic Foil Just like translucent foil, metalized holographic foil is embedded within the body of the ID card. The difference between the translucent and metalized foil is that the latter variety visually displays, regardless of which angle you hold the card at. This is another option that will add durability and longevity to your card’s security while it helps prevent your cards from being counterfeited, imitated, or forged. Micro Text Because it’s so tiny and intricately detailed, a microscope is actually required for magnifying and seeing micro text. With this level of detail, counterfeiting a logo or brandmark is virtually impossible using any type of dye sublimation, inkjet, or laser printer. Micro text can be placed within a line or even in an element of your artwork. Custom Fine Line Design (Guilloche Pattern) Another security option is custom fine line design (also referred to as the “Guilloche Pattern”). It, too, is so intricate that you won’t be able to counterfeit or reproduce it using any type of standard dye sublimation, inkjet, or laser printer. These are very fine, complex lines that form a distinct pattern on the card’s surface. Not only are they nearly impossible to reproduce, but they can also be easily verified by the naked eye. Additionally, you have the option of getting these cards pre-printed with your organization’s logo already embedded; all you need to do is print the specific cardholder data on each card. One thing to keep in mind is that each of these security options can be combined to make your card as secure as possible while keeping the cost as low as possible. Combining these technologies is an affordable and smart solution for adding high security to your ID program without the hassle of expensive upgrades or time-intensive, hand-applied laminates.
