5 Quick Tips for New ID Card Printer Owners

If you're the proud owner and/or user of a brand new ID card printer, congratulations are in order! We're pretty sure you'll be delighted with this wise investment for your organization. Just think of how absolutely amazing your new ID cards will look, last, and impress! To keep your printer running like new, I've gathered a few helpful tips that can really make a difference to the overall administration, performance, and longevity of your ID card printer.New ID Card Printer Tip #1: Treat your new printer nicely. It'll treat you nicely right back. Like most office equipment, make sure to clean your printer regularly. We offer a wide variety of comprehensive and affordable cleaning kits to keep your printer running smoothly and efficiently. We also have dust covers that will help reduce the risk of expensive printhead damage from exposure to airborne debris and static. They're easy-to-fit and are covered by a lifetime guarantee. Tip #2: No one likes static. Not even ID cards. It's important to be careful when you’re handling your blank ID cards. Holding them by the edges and fanning them apart helps reduce the amount of static that will prevent the cards from sticking together or causing issues when feeding cards through your printer. Tip #3: Fixing a torn ribbon is easier than you think. Printer ribbons can tear from time to time. Believe it or not, a piece of tape can often remedy the situation. Carefully tape the two pieces of the ribbon together, advance the ribbon forward, and continue card printing. If this happens more than once or twice, your ribbon may be getting too hot. Changing the printer driver settings to increase the amount of ink on a card for deeper or darker colors can result in the ribbon becoming overheated and then breaking. An easy fix is to restore the printer driver to the default settings. In addition, the ribbon sensor may require recalibrating (instructions for this can be found in the printer's user manual). Tip #4: Test, test, test. Did I mention test? Whether your card design is complex or simple, you won’t know what the finished product will look like until you hit "Print." Rather than sending a whole batch through the printing process, try printing a single card first. The printer driver lets you make adjustments in the color intensity on your cards, for example. You can calibrate and tweak the settings until you're happy with the outcome. Another recommendation if you're using prox cards for the final product: use CR8030 PVC cards for testing purposes. They're less expensive and great for helping fine-tune your design until it's perfect. Tip #5: A little training goes a long way. If the thought of learning how to operate and maximize all of the features your new ID card printer offers makes you nervous, you need not worry.
