Using an RFID (radio frequency ID) chip that's embedded inside the UBand, information is seamlessly transmitted via radio waves. By using using electrostatic coupling within the radio frequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, it allows for the unique identification an object or person. At its surface, proximity technology is a relatively simple process. It has three basic components:
- an antenna
- a transceiver
- a transponder
The antenna first uses radio frequency waves to transmit a signal that activates the transponder. When it’s activated, the tag transmits the data back to the antenna. The data is then used to notify a programmable logic controller that an action should occur. This action could be as simple as raising an access gate or as complicated as interfacing with a database to carry out a monetary transaction.
The RFID technology is typically integrated into plastic cards or key fobs, but the new UBand makes it easily available in a rugged yet attractive silicone wristband, making them an optimal "hands-free" alternative to proximity cards or key fobs.
