When to Use Adhesive-Backed Cards

Implementing adhesive-backed ID cards into your ID card program is optimal if you currently use clamshell proximity or technology cards which are too thick to be printed by standard ID printers.

Once they are printed, these ID cards have a convenient peel-off backing that is easily removed and can be applied to the clamshell or technology cards you are using for your credential program.

The primary advantages of using adhesive-backed cards is that they save money by providing the use of the older clamshell cards or thicker technology cards while adding a visual security. They can also be used to create gift cards.

Adhesive-backed cards are the same size as a standard credit card are available in both the CR80 and CR79 card sizes. The CR79 size actually works perfectly with clamshell cards, because it fits around the card’s surface without leaving sticky edges. However, it is important to note that due to their specialized size, CR79 adhesive-backed cards do not work in every ID card printer. It’s always a good rule of thumb to check your printer’s compatibility for this card size.

We offer two types of these cards:

  • Paper-backed – Although these are less expensive, they may cause quality issues or additional card jams as the rollers in a card printer are designed for plastic PVC material.
  • Mylar-backed – These are less problematic since the Mylar material is less flexible than paper which results in fewer card jams and a better flow over the rollers.

Quick TipA couple of Quick Tips!  (1.) Most ID card printer manufacturers recommend using Mylar-backed cards for the best results. (2.) If you're placing these cards on pre-slotted access control cards, you will need a slot punch to render a matching hole in the adhesive-backed PVC card. Slot punching should be done after printing to avoid damage to the printhead.
