ID Cards

What are the Differences Between Programmed & Nonprogrammed Cards?

With the identification world evolving more and more every day, some organizations

are looking for a way to more efficiently manage and program their access control (or proximity) cards themselves. HID developed a solution to program access control cards in-house using the HID ID card software, Asure ID, along with Fargo ID card printers and hardware.

The technology that was available in the past was more of an HID reader rather than an encoder/writer. So why encode cards in-house versus using a third party resource? Most end users of HID cards have the same common misconception: “I purchase nonprogrammed cards, and I will program them in-house.” Unfortunately, that is not exactly a true statement. In fact, more than 98% of HID cards are programmed through a supplier like ID Wholesaler or the manufacturer; the end user simply activates the card through their access software. HID's new solution allows end users to purchase nonprogrammed cards and encode specific information on the cards. Some say this is a waste of an added $3,000 to their ID solution. However, I've found that a number of organizations having multiple locations say they would like to control the cards more closely, which leads them to researching an in-house encoding system.

What's Required for Your Current Process? First off, you need a modular, mid- to high-level Fargo ID printer such as the

DTC4500e or HDP5000. You can then add the necessary encoding chip to the printer which allows the printer to "talk" directly with the Asure ID software program (the Asure ID Exchange version is a must for this CP1000/HID encoding technology). In addition, you'll need to purchase the same proximity cards, but instead of LGGMN programming, you'll need NGGNN cards. NGGNN prox cards are a nonprogrammed option that costs the same as if the cards were programmed or encoded for you. You'll also need additional support and training from our Tech Support Team to get this set up correctly and in a timely fashion.

Overall, Is It Worth Looking Into? Honestly, this depends wholly on the organization and the requirements they need to satisfy. After explaining the necessary steps to have an access control system which an organization can have complete control over, it generally tends to result in the customer ordering another 100 programmed HID cards (LGGMN cards). To get your ID card printer, hardware, and access control cards ready to program in-house, I strong recommend that you get additional assistance from our Technical Support team to ensure a timely and successful implementation!
