What is Dye Migration?

What is dye migration?

Dye migration occurs when a printed plastic card is worn in a badge holder that is exposed to frequent heat and pressure. Dye migration is common in situations where employees work outside, leave their ID in vehicles, or store it in a vinyl window of a wallet.

There are a few ways to solve this industry problem. The best and recommended solution is to use a laminating ID card printer. A clear or holographic laminate patch is placed on the plastic card after it is printed. This laminate acts as a barrier between the card and holder to prevent the dye from migrating.

If a lamination printer is not in your budget, there are two other solutions. The first solution is to use an anti-print transfer badge holder. These high-quality badge holders prevent dye migration. Two customer favorites include part number 1840-5070 (for portrait orientation) and 1840-5071 (for landscape orientation).

The final way to prevent dye migration is to add a self-adhesive overlaminate. These laminates are applied manually and come standard in clear or with basic holographic images. If you have the time and the patience to apply them by hand, they are an inexpensive (and very easy!) way to improve ID card durability.
